April 8, 2013

Boatright, M. D. (2010). Graphic Journeys: Graphic Novels’ Representations of Immigrant Experiences. Journal Of Adolescent & Adult Literacy, 53(6), 468-476.

In “Graphic Journeys- Graphic Novels’ Representations of Immigrant Experiences the author examines graphic novels dealing with the immigrant experience. Such novels can be a provocative resource for issues arising from immigration, according to the author. The article examines issues raised in three examples “The Arrival,” by Shaun Tan, “The Four Immigrants Manga: A Japanese Experience in San Francisco, 1904-1924,” by Henry Yoshitaka Kiyama and “American Born Chinese,” by Gene Luen Yang. Among other issues the article examines immigrant experience as an element of autobiography.
