Graphic Novels in the Classroom

April 6, 2013

Carlson, I. (2008). Graphic Novels in the Classroom. School Librarian’s Workshop, 29(1), 22-23.

Graphic Novels in the Classroom” explores the use and benefits of using graphic novels in an A/P English class. Ian Carlson’s article recognizes the criticisms and concerns about using comic books or graphic novels in class, but he is quick to point out that he uses nonfiction graphic novels and has found that allowing his students to read this medium in conjunction with traditional textbooks helps increase their analytical skills needed not only to pass his class, but also going forward into college. Carlson shares resources and techniques on where teachers can begin when incorporating graphic novels into the curriculum and the impact graphic novels have on students.
