Safe Area Gorazde: The War in Eastern Bosnia 1992-95 by Joe Sacco

March 26, 2013

Safe Area GorazdeIn 1996 Joe Sacco spent five months in Bosnia submerging himself into the realities of war time by tracking down the stories of survivors; stories that were not told through conventional news media. Stories told not from the perspective of the military or the government, but from the perspective of the people caught up in the middle – the people and families who endured the horrors of this war. This brilliantly illustrated graphic novel was the winner of the 2001 Eisner Award for best Graphic Album and album it is. The images Sacco draws are based on the memories of those who endured the hardship of the war in Eastern Bosnia for three years. The book focuses on the Muslim-held enclave of Gorazde, which was besieged by Bosnian Serbs during the war. Sacco lived for a month in Gorazde, entering before the Muslims trapped inside had access to the outside world, electricity or running water.
